Born May 31, 1931, in Obion County, Tennessee. Jim graduated from Union City High School, Union City, Tennessee in 1949. He enlisted in the United States Air Force in July 1950 at the beginning of the Korean conflict. Upon completion of basic training at Lackland Air Force Base he was assigned to duty as an academic instructor teaching Military Science and Tactics to basic trainees. During this assignment he met Shirley Smith, a lovely San Antonio girl, at First Baptist Church, and they were married on Valentine’s Day, 1952.
Immediately following their wedding, Jim and Shirley departed for his new assignment teaching Ethics and Leadership at Parks Air Force Base, California. During this tour of duty Jim and Shirley were blessed with two children, a daughter and a son. In October 1954 Jim was selected for Officer Candidate School.
Upon graduation from OCS in June 1955, Jim’s first assignment was as a personnel officer at Loring AFB, Limestone, Maine. Subsequent assignments ranged from Alaska to Louisiana and from Virginia to Viet Nam with his final assignment before retirement at the Pentagon as Executive Officer for the Directorate of Doctrine, Concepts and Objectives, Headquarters, USAF.
Immediately following his military retirement in 1970, Jim joined Suburban Trust Company, in Hyattsville, Maryland (suburban Washington, DC), as employment manager and personnel officer.
In 1974, Jim and Shirley returned to San Antonio when he joined USAA as a personnel interviewer/ recruiter while obtaining a BS degree in Business Management from Our Lady of the Lake University. When USAA chartered the USAA Federal Savings Bank federal Jim was selected to produce a personnel policy and procedures manual that met the federal guidelines while the bank operated as a separate entity under the USAA umbrella. As Vice President of Personnel and Administration, Jim managed those functions until his retirement in 1986.
Jim enjoyed a variety of useful and interesting endeavors over the next fifteen years that included residential/commercial real estate, executive recruiting for a local executive search firm, Associate Director, San Antonio Metropolitan Ministries. (SAMM Shelter), Executive Director, Christian Women’s Job Corps.
Jim is preceded in death by his parents, Elbert B. and Elna (Dyer) Stone. He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Shirley, his children Rondi Stone and husband Ken Northum, Jim Stone and wife Debbie, grandchildren Matthew Miller, Aaron Miller, Christopher Stone, LeeAnne Arnold and Zachary Barber, great-grandchildren Caiden Miller, James Miller and Ada Arnold as well as nieces and nephews.
Jim was a devoted follower and servant of his Lord Jesus Christ, a fifty-year member and a life deacon of First Baptist Church San Antonio.
Visitation will be Friday, December 8, 2023, at 10 a. m. at First Baptist Church Sanctuary.
The funeral service will be Friday, December 8, 2023, at 11 a.m.
A reception will follow at noon at First Baptist Church Wilson Chapel.
Pastor Chris Johnson will officiate. Interment with Military Honors will follow in Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery. Pallbearers are Matthew Miller, Zachary Barber, Caiden Miller, Aaron Miller, Christopher Stone and LeeAnne Arnold.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Missions Fund at First Baptist Church San Antonio.
