Weakley County Fiber Committee and WK&T strive to bring fiber to entire county

Story by Shannon Taylor Senior Investigative Reporter

The Weakley County Fiber Committee met Monday, Feb. 13 to discuss where WK&T and the county stand on the four-phase fiber project for the county.

Phase 1 has been completed with 587 customers signing up for fiber. Part of this grant was for up to 10 community access points in the triangular-shaped area of Sidonia, Martin, Sharon and Dresden. An access point is a community area where Wi-Fi is installed under the grant so that members of the community who don’t yet have fiber can use the wi-fi at this point for the public. The committee has to ask departments and churches to see where these access points could be set at.

Phase 2, which is the Palmersville area and north part of Dresden, is almost complete and should be completed within the next couple of weeks. All construction has been completed and the rest should be wrapped up soon.

There are state maps that are covered under the grant and if WK&T does not follow those maps, they could forfeit the grant money received. This is why some people have been able to get fiber in areas and others haven’t. These people, “across the road” are ones where a neighbor was able to get fiber or someone across the street, but they were not able to. There are roughly 230 people that still need fiber in the Phase 1 and 2 areas. Phase 1 has been completed so anyone under that phase would now be able to get access, however with Phase 2 not being completed yet, those people would have to wait. The people who were unable to get fiber will be able to at a later time once each phase has been completed.

Of these 230 people there are around 100 that are not included in any grant, either old or new. The cost would be $1,000 per home, which would be $100,000, which WK&T want to match with the county 50/50. A motion was made and passed unanimously for a recommendation to move forward with paying $50,000 for, as a Resolution needs to be passed to move forward, and the issue will be heard at the next Finance, Ways, and Means meeting on March 13.

Phase 3, the Pillowville area, has all construction done and it should be completed within the next couple of months.

Phase 4 has started engineering, but that is as far as WK&T has gotten. The state has not yet sent contracts out to any awardee so officially WK&T cannot start until they get them.

The County and WK&T ask that everyone be patient and contact them if you haven’t been able to receive fiber and they will give you more information.
