Weakley County Sheriff’s Deputy Charged with Aggravated Assault

Hailey Batts

Story by Shannon Taylor, Senior Investigative Reporter

On Dec. 4 the 27th Judicial District Attorney’s Office Investigator Drew Vernon was contacted by the Weakley County Sheriff’s Department Chief Deputy Candace Winstead and began investigating an incident in which an off-duty WCSD deputy discharged her firearm during a domestic dispute.

Further investigation showed that on the evening of Dec. 3, the offender, Hailey Jean Batts, did display and fire a pistol in the direction of her boyfriend, John Box, during an argument while they were in the same room.

The round struck the floor within inches of Box’s foot, which resulted in the victim having minor injuries to his leg caused by the bullet fragments. Batts actions also caused the victim to reasonably fear imminent bodily injury. Upon being advised of her Miranda warning, Batts admitted to Captain Hatler and Vernon of the incident and that there was no justification for obtaining or using her firearm.

Batts has been charged with Aggravated Assault and Sheriff Terry McDade told the press that she has since been terminated and that the investigation was done by an outside agency so that they could be as transparent as possible.
