John Yates

He was born May 8, 1950, to the late John and Mary Hazel Yates of Union City. He was the grandson of the late George and Bertha Yates and of the late Boyd and Rubye Forbus, all of the Clayton community. He married Myra Faught of Memphis Dec. 21, 1982. She survives.
In high school, he worked for the Union City Daily Messenger, first folding and delivering papers by bicycle, then, upon turning 16, working in the office handling late deliveries of the paper. He graduated from Union City High School and attended the University of Tennessee at Martin. He then worked the rest of his life as a chemist in research and development, first for Schering Plough in Memphis, and then for Hawaiian Tropic in Daytona Beach, Fla.
He formerly served as a member of the Tipton County Rescue Squad. He was an avid motorcyclist, NASCAR fan, scuba diver and cat lover.
Besides his wife, he is survived by his son, John Leslie Yates of Bethesda, Md.; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Shannen and Randy Taylor of Olive Branch, Miss., Gina and Bruce Sordes of Tipton County and Andrea Sordes of Tipton County; three sisters and brothers-in law, Lynda and David Hamblen, Brenda and Bob Miller and Angeline and Jeff Nichols, all of Union City; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Carmen Estraca of Saint Thomas, the US Virgin Islands.
He donated his body to medical science and research. A memorial service will be announced at a later date.
