Blair/Akin top tandem at ‘Pop’
Andrew Blair and Chris Akin combined to shoot a two-day 133 total and claim the championship in the championship flight of the Poplar Meadows Member/Guest Tournament this past weekend at the Union City club.
The winning duo followed up a first-day 64 with a 69 on Sunday to edge their closest competitors by four strokes.
The team of Dave Frankum and Bob Walcott won a scorecard playoff for second vs. the twosome of Matt Russell and Robert Huffstutter. Both groups came in with scores of 137.
Frankum/Walcott shot 68-69, while Russell/Huffstutter were tied for the lead in the flight after the first day before registering a 73 on Sunday.
Roger Tanner and Barry Reaves took honors in the first flight via a scorecard tie-breaker when they and the team of Houston and Leon Haag both came in at 146 with identical 72-74 numbers.
The team of John Tanner and Will Bell was one stroke back at 147 and placed third in the first division after shooting 73-74.
Ron Cooper and Scott Foster teamed up to distance themselves from the field in the second flight, finishing four strokes clear of the competition with a 152. Cooper/Foster shot 75 on Day 1 and then 77 on the second 18 holes.
Rocky Johnson and Chris Morrow fired 78s on both days to end up with a 156 total and place second in the division.
The two-man team of Sidney Chappell and Scotty Leverette followed up a first-day 75 with an 83 on Sunday to place third in the flight.
A total of 26 teams participated in the event.
