| Remember when takes a look back at the local stories from the files of The Messenger that took place 1, 5, 10, 20 and 30 years ago. 30 Years Ago June 14 — Coke sailed through the Obion County Babe Ruth League with an unblemished 15-0 record. Members of the perfect team included Larry Manus, Michael Walton, Donnie Jackson, John Bobo, Tracy Hale, Bryan Cranford, Kevin Lyons, Mark Miller, Stan Haskins, Joe Clanton, Chucky Yates and Barry Kendall. Connie Miller was the club manager, with Scotty Haskins serving as the coach. June 19 — A pair of local prep baseball standouts signed scholarship papers to play at Jackson State Community College. Obion Central shortstop Paul Decker and Union City pitcher John Fowler were headed to the two-year college after stellar high school careers. Decker, who led the Rebels to the Class 2A state semifinals his senior season, batted .320 for head coach Barry Barnett in his final high school campaign. Fowler spun three no-hitters as a senior and ended the spring with a 9-3 record. 20 Years Ago June 17 — A host of local youths participated in Sharman Coley’s UT Martin girls’ hoop camp. Among those honing their skills were Stephanie Sedberry, Samantha Revelle, Jo Beth Petty, Kellee Ingram, Teena Lairy, Vicky Lake and Ashley Towater of Union City; Amanda Haynes, Julie Haynes, Penny McCullough and Rebecca McCullough of Lake Road and Black Oak’s Hollie Parker. June 19 — Andrew Evans starred in McAdoo Builders’ 12-1 victory over Gurien’s in Union City Minor League play. Evans belted a pair of home runs and also struck out 14 opposing batters in the triumph. Bruce Brown had a triple for the winners. Sean Lannahan fanned 13 in a losing effort for Gurien’s. Buddy’s Wrecker Service got homers from both Jon Kincade and Brandon Henry to support winning hurler Brandon Gregg in a 15-6 romp over E.W. James. The Grocers’ Brent Nicholson also went deep. 10 Years Ago June 18 — Longtime Union City High School football coach Barry Duncan resigned those duties to enter administration, where he’ll become the assistant principal at the new UC Elementary School. The 48-year-old Duncan was a 1972 UCHS graduate and spent all but four years in the teaching/coaching business in the Union City system. In addition to being the top trusted aide of Tornado skipper Randy Barnes, Duncan also coached baseball, softball, girls’ track and basketball at one time or another at Union City. June 20 — A pair of Obion County Central products — Bradley Patterson and Wes May — left the local coaching ranks for opportunities elsewhere. Patterson gave up the head position of the Fulton City football program for an assistant’s role at Lone Oak, while May was to jump to the high school level with the Columbia Academy girls’ hoop program after spending five years at Hillcrest. Patterson led the Bulldogs to 7-15 in two years, and also had experience at Fulton County, Lake County and Humboldt. May was to take over a struggling CA program that went 1-26 the year before. 5 Years Ago June 15 — Former Union City High School basketball standout Antawn Coby inked to continue his career at Lambuth. Coby, The Messenger’s 2005 Player of the Year after leading the Tornadoes to a 31-3 record and setting a school-record single-game scoring mark with 47 points vs. Westview, Coby played two years at Jackson State Community College. He was named all-region after averaging 18.6 points and 4.8 assists as a sophomore. June 19 — Jeremy Maddox, the head baseball coach at McKenzie, resigned that position for a teaching job at Union City Elementary and was expected to be named as an assistant coach to Tornado skipper David Barker. Maddox spent three seasons at MHS, helping the Rebels to the 2006 Class 1A state championship behind the arm of fireballing righthander Drew Hayes. 1 Year Ago June 14 — Jacob Hyde’s experience in the first-ever Football Tech Camps Future Star All Star Game was a positive one. The rising Union City Middle School eighth-grader rushed for 90 yards on eight carries in the Tennessee team’s 26-25 victory over their Kentucky counterparts in a game that went into overtime. The contest was played at Carson-Newman. June 15 — Vicki McLeary teamed with Ashley Yates to shoot 60 and win the top flight in the Wynridge Greens Two-Ladies Scramble. Linda Brann and Faye Brundige combined to finish with a 63 and end up in second place, while the team of Janis Garrigan and Wanda Brown (72) was third. Published in The Messenger 6.14.12 |
