Gleason to host community-centered activities in May

Story By Megan Dame, Press Reporter
Gleason residents have a lot to look forward to as warmer months approach. With a very light agenda, details of two community events were announced during the monthly meeting of Gleason’s mayor and board of aldermen recently.
Gleason mayor Charles Anderson reminded everyone that the city-wide yard sale is set for May 5-6. According to the city’s social media page, for residents who wish to have their sale information included on the yard sale map, the deadline to do so is noon on Thursday, May 4. To submit information, call city hall at (731) 648-5547. Organizers will also need to know if it will be a one-day sale or two. Yard sale maps will be available for pickup after noon on May 4th at city hall.
It was also announced that the Gleason Fire Department will host its annual chicken cooking from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Sunday, May 7, at the fire department. According to a spokesman, plates will be $7 each and include a chicken quarter, green beans, sweet potatoes, and a roll.
Before adjourning the brief 10-minute meeting, Anderson praised the city’s employees and thank them for their service to the city.
Anderson commented on the city’s public works employees for all their work to prepare the ball fields in time for the youth baseball and softball seasons which began Monday evening.
Anderson also praised the city’s new waste collection service, Raekar for doing a good job. “They have done great so far and I haven’t had even one complaint,” Anderson said.
The agenda included the owner of the Gleason Shopette, but he was not present. Anderson told the board that the owner was to appear before the board to request they consider amending the city ordinance, which requires 300 feet of space between fireworks sales and beer sales. Anderson explained the board could take no action on this request until it is brought before the board.
The mayor and board of aldermen will hold their next meeting on Monday, May 15 at 7 p.m. at Gleason City Hall.
