story by Senior Investigative Reporter Shannon Taylor
On Nov. 17 Patrolman Grayson Whitworth from Martin Police Department responded to a collision around 11:57 a.m. that occurred on Industrial Park Drive near Stanley Black and Decker, damaging both vehicles.
Cory Smith, from Sharon, stated that he was East after leaving the Stanley Black and Decker parking lot, advising that he pulled out of the parking lot traveling South on Industrial Park Drive and that he did not see the vehicle, which belonged to Dearca Nicholson from Martin until it was too late to stop.
Smith said that he tried to swerve to the left out of Nicholson’s path but failed to do so before striking Nicholson’s vehicle. Smith accrued damage to the passenger side front bumper and fender.
Nicholson stated that he was traveling North on Industrial Park Drive when he saw Smith pull out of the parking lot of Stanley Black and Decker without attempting to stop. He stated that he attempted to swerve left out of the way but was unable to before being struck by Smith.
Smith continued after he was struck, lost control of the vehicle and flipping it into the ditch off the west side of the road. Nicholson had damage to the center passenger side and top.
Both drivers’ conditions were normal, no injuries were reported, and no medical attention was received.
