REGISTERING TO VOTE

REGISTERING TO VOTE — Gallatin residents (from left) Ed and Betty Mayberry were assisted by Obion County Administrator of Elections Leigh Schlager Wednesday morning in filling out voter registration forms. The couple, who own property in Samburg, are the first to register as property-rights voters there and now will be able to vote in city elections. Samburg recently approved the measure giving non-resident property owners the right to vote in city elections. Mayor John Glessner said of all the things he and the board of aldermen have accomplished, it is near the top of the list. “People should have a right to vote. I encourage anyone who owns property in Samburg and lives outside the city limits to register to vote,” he said. Only two people per property will be able to register to vote under the measure. A deed showing ownership will be required when registering. Paper ballots will be sent to those voters for the appropriate elections. Samburg next has an election in November. Glessner said Samburg is the second municipality in Obion County to offer this right to its taxpayers. The other one is Kenton. “I think every town in Obion County should extend that right to their property owners,” he said.
