Martin Librarian Announces Retirement

At the monthly meeting on Oct. 25, 2021, Roberta Peacock, Martin Public Library Director, announced her retirement to the Board of Trustees. Ms. Peacock said that her last day of employment will be Dec. 31, 2021.

According to Ms. Peacock, her journey as a librarian began when she took a part-time job in college to earn “a little extra spending money.” After two years, Ms. Peacock discovered that she loved working in libraries and determined Library Science as her career of choice.

As a result, Ms. Peacock graduated from the University of Southern Mississippi with a Bachelor of Science degree in Library Science and began her career as a middle school librarian. In 1983, she began working for the C.E. Weldon Public Library, and in 2002, she became Library Director.

Among her many accomplishments as the Library Director, Ms. Peacock is most proud of the new Martin Public Library building. Discussions for the new building began in 2016, and it was her goal to see the library move into its new space.

When asked about her retirement, she commented, “I wanted to see the new building built, and now it is time to turn leadership over to the next generation.” Upon her retirement Ms. Peacock is looking forward to traveling with her husband, visiting her grandchildren and expanding her hobbies; in particular, Ms. Peacock, an active member of Weakley County Historical and Genealogical Society, enjoys genealogy research.

The Martin Public Library Board of Trustees thanks Ms. Peacock for her outstanding service to Martin Public Library, the City of Martin, and the surrounding communities. The Board is currently planning a public retirement reception in honor of Ms. Peacock. Information about that event will be forthcoming.

I no longer reside in West Tennessee. Central Florida is my
home now. I am a transplant.
But you can’t transplant, or erase wonderful memories of people who have had an effect on your life.
Ms Roberta Peacock was solid rock to me.. a person who helped to create new foundations of knowledge. Many times I would drive from Union City (quite a few times with my grandkids, but usually during my slack periods).
You enhanced my interest in reading materials, either thru audio, visuals, or just old fashioned reading materials.
You are, and will always be, a special light from God.. for those who’ve entered the enchanted building of Martin Library
