E.W. James fined for selling alcohol to minor

Story by Shannon Taylor Senior Investigative Reporter

The City of Dresden Beer Board met on Monday, Dec. 5, to discuss one business in Dresden in violation of selling alcohol to a minor.

Members of the Beer Board present were Mark Bell and Tim Spence. Mike Youngblood was absent. City Recorder Jennifer Branscum, Interim Police Chief Bryan Chandler, a representative from the Weakley County Prevention Coalition and the store manager of E.W. James were also present.

Branscum stated a clerk at E.W. James sold beer to a minor and did not card the customer. The clerk was cited into General Sessions court and was assessed court costs. Tim Spence made a motion to assess a civil penalty of $500 to E. W. James and place them on probation for six months. Mark Bell seconded the motion. The motion was approved unanimously.

E.W. James has 30 days to pay the civil penalty. It was noted that if an additional violation occurs within the six-month probationary period, an additional fine would be assessed, and the business would risk losing their beer license.
