Martin man arrested for DUI in Sharon

Daniel Simpson

Story by Senior Investigative Reporter Shannon Taylor

On Nov. 16 at approximately 1:20 a.m., Sergeant Shannon Neal with the Weakley County Sheriff’s Department was patrolling west on East Main St. in Sharon and as he came to the four-way stop he observed a gray Buick traveling at a high rate of speed heading north on South Highway Avenue.

As the vehicle approached the stop sign it slammed on its brakes and did not stop until halfway through the intersection. Neal initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle and made contact with the driver, 53-year-old Daniel H. Simpson from Martin.

While speaking with Simpson, Neal smelled an odor that he determined to be consistent with that of an alcoholic beverage and observed multiple indicators of impairment. With those observations Neal had the driver complete a battery of field sobriety tests. Neal then determined it to be unsafe to allow Simpson to continue to operate a motor vehicle due to his impairment.

Simpson was arrested without further incident and charged with driving under the influence first offense, violation of stop sign law and violation of implied consent law. Simpson did not consent to a blood/breath testing. Simpson was booked to the Weakley County Detention Center.
