Martin man charged with aggravated assault, evading arrest and discharge of firearms

Story by Senior Investigative Reporter Shannon Taylor

On Nov. 6 at approximately 9:56 a.m. Patrolman Grant Davis with Martin Police Department responded to 51 E. Peach St. in reference to domestic assault and possible shots fired.

Both parties had already left the scene when Davis arrived, but he was able to speak with witnesses about what had occurred.

Witness one and two stated they heard the victim shouting “just kill me” outside, and then one gunshot. Both witnesses stated that after the gunshot, they saw the offender, Jonathan Jones, vehicle speed away.

After speaking with both witnesses, Davis then spoke with witness three and four. Both witnesses stated that the offender and victim woke them up shouting and stomping. They stated that they overheard the victim saying, “just kill me” and “look what you did to me.” Both witnesses stated then that the victim went to drive away and the offender shot the gun into the air, and then they both sped away.

After Davis cleared the scene, he observed a vehicle matching the description of Jones’ vehicle. After Davis was able to catch up to it, he identified it to be the same vehicle. Davis then initiated his emergency equipment and attempted to make a traffic stop on Jones. Jones continued driving even after Davis attempted to stop him.

Jones then got out of the vehicle on Jones St. and Davis was able to apprehend him. Davis was then placed under arrest for Evading Arrest, Discharge of a Firearm, and was transported to the Martin Police Department for booking procedures. There was a 9mm shell casing recovered at the scene as well as a Stoeger STR-9 pistol that matched the casing found in the vehicle.

After arriving at the Martin Police Department, Davis was able to make contact with the victim. The victim stated that she and the offender had been arguing and she left the residence. The victim stated she then went back to the residence to get some belongings and they continued arguing. The victim stated the offender then punched her in the face, and she then hit him with a Febreze bottle.

The victim stated she then got the kids and went to leave again, and Jones came outside and shot the gun into the air. After speaking with the victim, Jones was charged with aggravated assault, evading arrest, and discharge of a firearm.

The firearm was placed into evidence and photographed. The firearms trace will be completed by Investigator Scott Diehl.
