We Care to offer Weakley County families free groceries

We Care Ministries is offering bags of groceries for families across Weakley County next week.

On April 21, volunteers will pack and distribute 500 bags of groceries in the We Care parking lot for families who need a little extra helps during this time.

“Anyone can be poor for a moment and these circumstances are definitely beyond their control,” Director Betty Baker noted.

She said the organization has received the blessing of Martin Mayor Randy Brundige for the drive-through grocery giveaway.

“We will adhere to the guidelines set down by local officials to wear masks, gloves and maintain distance,” she added.

Families can drive through the parking lot of We Care, located on North Lindell Street in Martin, from 5-6:30 that evening. Volunteers will place the food in families’ vehicles so no one will have to get out of their vehicles.

We Care is also putting a call out for volunteers that day to help pack grocery bags and distribute the food. Bagging will take place from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. April 21. Volunteers are needed to load vehicles from 4:30-7 p.m. The organization has requested gloves and masks from anyone who has extra for that day and anyone wishing to volunteer who already have masks and gloves are encouraged to wear them that day.

Volunteers are asked to call We Care to sign up for volunteering.

In an effort to accommodate those in the county who work second shift and can’t pick up food Tuesday evening, they are asked to call We Care Monday to reserve a voucher to be able to pick up groceries Wednesday.

“We know how difficult it can be when paychecks are not coming in. We encourage any in our community who are struggling to provide food for their families to come through the drive through. Many elderly in our community struggle every day and often have to choose between food and medicine. We want these people to be here to receive a little extra help,” Baker said.

This service is available to anyone in the community. No information is needed for pick-up of food items. This is a drive-through service.

McDonald’s, Burger King, Wendy’s, Sonic and Dairy Queen are with We Care to offer ice cream vouchers for children of families. Ruler Foods will be bringing the monthly truck load of food the organization purchases with extras to give away that night.

This is an opportunity to bring churches of various denominations together working with a common goal of helping the community through a difficult time.

“This is something we want to do for our community to show them that they are not alone. We care about this community and want to do our part as the hands and feet of Jesus to show our love and concern and to give all glory to God for the blessings He provides,” Baker added.
