Bessie Lee Cummings

Bessie Lee Cummings, 93, formerly of South Fulton, passed away on Tuesday, March 1, 2016, at 9:25 a.m. at Trevecca Health and Rehab Center in Nashville. Mrs. Cummings was the owner of the former Cummings Beauty Shop in South Fulton on Stovall Street for more than 50 years.

She was born to the late Mr. Tim Clark and Mrs. Beulah (Olive) Clark Jan 9, 1923, in Water Valley, Ky. She was married to the late Mr. Nelson Cummings, and to this union five children were born: Darryl N. Cummings, Beverly (Cummings) Parker, Charles Stanley Cummings, Rodney O. Cummings and Byron C. Cummings.
A long-time member of Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church in South Fulton, she served there through the Self Denial Club, Mother’s Board, pastor’s search committee, usher board and kitchen committee. She was also a member of the Homemaker’s Club and received honors from Ken-Tenn Homecoming & Reunion as a Leading Black Business Ladies in the Community.
Her hobbies included cooking and playing games.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Nelson; her son, Rodney; three brothers, Vernell Dumas, Wilmus Dumas and Roy Lee Clark; and two sisters, Lorraine Smith and Myrtle Clark.
Cherishing her memory are her children and their spouses, Darryl N. (Reitha) Cummings, Beverly C. (Ulysses) Parker, Charles S. Cummings, daughter-in-law Loretta Cummings, and Byron C. Cummings; her grandchildren and their spouses, Darryl N. Cummings Jr., Devona C. (Chris) Smith, Theresa C. (Eddie) Webster, Charles S. (Micah) Cummings II, Antiono L. Jones, Michal Morrison and Jaime L. Morrison; her great-grandchildren, Diatalon Cummings, Miles Cummings, Porsha Fair, Ronnique Fair, Amber Fair, Raven Fair, Jasmine Brown, Mia Mackey, Shekinah Morrison, Myrical Morrison, Inari Boyer, Charles S. Cummings III, Taylor Cummings, Mike Cummings and Mathew Cummings; several nieces and cousins; Byron Gurley, a god son to the family; Priscialla Johnson and Phyllis Johnson, devoted nieces; and Robbie and James Harold Johnson, devoted children friends.
Funeral services will be at Greater Antioch Baptist Church in Fulton Friday at 11 a.m., with the Revs. Jessie Johnson and Anthony Johnson officiating.
Visitation will begin there at 10 on Friday.
