Frances Phillips

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Arrington Funeral Directors at 148 West University Parkway in Jackson, with the Rev. Paul Clayton officiating. Entombment will follow there in Highland Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.
Pallbearers will be her grandchildren: John M. Phillips, David Phillips, Mark Laub Jr., Chris Laub, Tyler Buckelew and Steven Buckelew. Honorary pallbearers will be her cousins, Dale and Judith Crockett, Frankie Crockett and Joan Capps.
The family will receive friends Wednesday 5-7 p.m. at the funeral home.
She graduated from Bradford High School in 1947 and pursued a degree in education, attending UT Martin and graduating from the former Lambuth College in Jackson. Frances taught first and fourth grades, last teaching at Pope Elementary School.
Frances gave her heart to God at Griffin’s Chapel Church in Bradford. She later attended Forest Heights United Methodist Church in Jackson, where she taught Sunday school classes for children.
She was known as the “Cookie Lady” for making cookies each Sunday for the MYF. Frances was active on the board and a member of United Methodist Women, as well. She was currently a member at Aldersgate United Methodist Church in Jackson.
Frances, known as “Mother” to three children, but will always be known as “Maw” to her grandchildren and her great-grandchildren. Frances enjoyed family get-togethers and  was often seen in the kitchen, preparing dinners and desserts. She will always be missed for her strong faith, her open arms of love and her pride in her family.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Dr. Charles D. Griffin; and her grandson, Joseph Griffin Phillips.
Mrs. Phillips is survived by three children, Dr. John Phillips and wife Cathey of Parsons, Dr. Susan Buckelew and husband Dennis of Union City and Leanne Laub and husband Mark of Bartlett; six grandchildren, John Michael Phillips and wife Bethany, David Phillips, Mark Laub Jr. and wife Tammy, Chris Laub and wife Katherine, Tyler Buckelew and Steven Buckelew; eight great-grandchildren, Jaxson, Jase, Griffin, Knox and Beau Phillips and Nathan, Makenzie and Kain Laub; her sister-in-law, Helen Griffin; two nephews; and her niece.
