UC entry top seeded
in Ripken Rookie event
Union City’s entry in the seven-team Western Tennessee Cal Ripken Rookie Tournament will be the top seed in the double-elmination Northwest District event.
The tourney will be played at the Martin Recreation Complex, beginning Friday and running through Monday, if necessary.
First round games Friday have Newbern playing the Martin 7’s and Trenton facing North Gibson at 6 p.m., and Lake County vs. Martin 8’s at 7:30.
The championship round will be played Monday night, starting at 6 o’clock.
Gals’ Wynridge outing
draws several players
The team of Betty Kean, Rana Buchanan, Charlotte Hall and Sharon Dill combined to win the women’s scramble at Wynridge Greens in Troy on Tuesday.
The foursome of Jackie Russell, Sandra Cobb, Shelly Stout and Linda Simrell placed second.
Wynridge Greens holds its weekly women’s scramble every Tuesday.

Skyhawk foe identified
in preseason tourney
The University of Tennessee at Martin women’s basketball team will have to wait no longer to find out its opponent in the 2013 Preseason Women’s National Invitational Tournament.
Pairings of the event were announced Tueday, and the Skyhawks will play host to Georgia State in the first round of the event Nov. 8. Tip-off between UTM and the Panthers is slated for 7 p.m. at the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center.
UT Martin was the only team in the nation to boast two Top 10 scorers last season, and both of them are coming back for more in 2013-14.
Two-time Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Year Jasmine Newsome (22.6 ppg, 5.3 rpg, 5.5 apg) teams with three-time OVC first-teamer Heather Butler (22.4 ppg, 3.7 rpg, 4.0 apg) as the Skyhawks shoot to win their fourth straight OVC Tournament title and ensuing NCAA Tournament berth that goes to the league champion.
Ten of the 16 teams in the preseason WNIT are coming off of NCAA Tournament appearances.
The field features Georgia State, Gonzaga, Idaho, IPFW, Louisville, Loyola Chicago, LSU, Mount St. Mary’s, North Carolina A&T, Oklahoma, Quinnipiac, Saint Joseph’s, Stephen F. Austin, Stetson, UT Martin and Wichita State.
The Preseason WNIT kicks off the women’s college basketball season and will be played Nov. 8-17 in a three-game guarantee championship format.
UT Martin is coming off a 19-15 season that saw the Skyhawks advance to the NCAA Tournament where they lost to eventual national runnuer Notre Dame.
