New Salem FCE Club met recently at Kountry Korner Restaurant with Bettie and Deanna Higgs as co-hostesses.
President Higgs opened the meeting with reading the thought for the day, “There are many ways to measure success, not the least of which is the way your children describe you when talking to a friend,” author unknown. She then welcomed everyone.
Thirteen members were in attendance, including  new member Joann Gill.
Devotion leader Kathy Simmons used an object lesson to share thoughts relating to summertime when many will be going to the beach or other activities. She encouraged the group to read from God’s word by using the object, a shovel to dig into God’s word from Ephesians and 1 Peter; a bucket to hold treasures to read from Isaiah and for strength; a beach ball to read from 1 Corinthians to provide excitement and joy; and sunglasses to read from John 13, for focus.
Marjorie Simmons led songs, “Faith of our Fathers,” and “The Good Old Summertime.”
Each one answered the roll call by secretary Halst, and by telling the date and place of her wedding. It was unusual that none were married in the month of June, known as the wedding month.
Sylvia Simmons brought us up to date on the finances by reading the treasurer’s report.
President Higgs reminded everyone that creative writing entries are due by July 1; to bring We Care items (school supplies) to the July meeting; the county council meeting will be held July 11 and Region 8  mini-conference is to be held in Jackson on Aug. 6.
Program leader Mary E. Bell gave a report which gave some unique and useful ideas for container gardening.
The members enjoyed recreation with prizes and refreshments of dessert and drinks provided by the hostesses.
The next meeting will be held 1:30 p.m. July 5 at the home of Mary E. Bell as hostess.
