The Hunter Hynds Unit of United Methodist Women met in early May at Stanley’s Chapel United Methodist Church, with 12 members present.
President Chris Cheatham called the meeting to order and asked for prayer concerns and joys. The Rev. Judith Wolfgang offered the prayer.
The minutes were read by Emily Haynes and the treasurer’s report was given by Leanne Parnell.
Sandra McTurner presented the prayer calendar and used Luke 2:25-38 as the text from which Simeon exclaimed, “ … my eyes have seen your salvation …”
After members recited the Purpose, Mrs. Cheatham read the Response Moment and pointed out that all are called, but discerning a calling requires prayer.
Mrs. Cheatham was in charge of the program, which focused on Haiti.
Various members of the group read from 18 Haitian proverbs. Everyone took part in a litany led by Mrs. Cheatham, who then told several facts about the country, including its culture, size and political leaders.
Linda Winstead read prayers written by students in U.S. kindergarten classes and Roberta Peacock read a second group of prayers written by first-graders uplifting Haiti.
Mrs. Cheatham closed by reading a prayer written for Haiti by Rose Marie Berger, a writer, pastor and faith-based activist affiliated with Sojourners Magazine.
The center of interest featured a cross-stitched coverlet, candles, a dove and framed pictures of a map of Haiti and the Haitian flag.
The next meeting will be June 19 at 7 p.m. at the church.
