‘Termite’ chews up City State bats in DQ’s first Little League win

May 31, 1983 — Dr. Lloyd Duncan, former four-year letterman on Yale University’s swimming team 30 years ago, has decided to resume competitive swimming. Dr. Duncan recently claimed several first place finishes in his age group in the Regional III Masters Championship meet in Nashville. Dr. Duncan set the best time in the 100 yard backstroke. He barely missed eclipsing the marks in the 50 and 200 yard backstroke events.
June 2, 1983 — The Dairy Queen Reds finally won their first game of the Little League season with a 14-6 win over the City State Pirates. The Reds scored seven runs in the third inning with Eric Settles, Jason Plunk, Stephen Stockton and Michael Pollard getting hits. Michael “Termite” Monroe scattered seven hits, struck out five and walked four for the win.

May 27, 1993 — The Weakley County Nursing Home Wildcats took down Gleason Bank 22-17 in the women’s softball season opener. Onessa Horton had a monster game with a pair of grand slams. One of her grand slams came in the sixth inning and broke open a tied game. She went 4-for-5 and had 10 RBI. Michele Stewart went 5-for-5 with two RBI, while Ida Graves went 3-for-5 with a three-run homer. Fannie Topton got two RBIs on three hits for the Wildcats.
June 1, 1993 — Martin’s JB House and partner Wilbert Segebarth of Dresden will look to defend their national shuffleboard doubles title at the 1993 National Senior Games in Baton Rouge, La. The duel won the 1989 national championship in St. Louis. House won a gold medal and SegeBarth a silver in singles competition in St. Louis.

May 27, 2003 — Greenfield recently held its all-sports banquet with numerous athletes winning awards in their chosen sport. Andrew Clements, Ben Davis and Justin Lyles were some of the few who won awards in football. Hillary Dunning, Anna Waddell and Katie Atnip won awards in girls’ basketball, while Thomas Galey, Tyler Porter and Matthew Thomas were some of the boys’ basketball winners. Elise Shane, Amber Harris and Amanda Pence won awards in softball, while Adam Dowland, Caleb Farmer and Baker Williams won some of the baseball awards.
May 29, 2003 — The District 13AA softball all-tournament and District 15A all-district baseball teams were recently announced with several Weakley Countians being named to the teams. Jennie Brooks, Whitney Ward and Laura Crittenden of Westview were named to the softball team. Dresden’s Casey Bennett, Wyman Price, Garner Goode, Gleason’s Aaron Vaughn, Slyton Gearin, Bradley Maddox, Shawn Rennison, Greenfield’s Tyler Porter, Andrew Clements, Baker Williams and Adam Dowland made the baseball team.

May 27, 2008 — Westview Lady Chargers’ run for a state softball title came to an end by a familiar foe. Covington ended Westview’s season with a 9-1 win in the BlueCross Spring Fling. The Lady Chargers finished with a 1-2 record in the double-elimination state tournament. Shaylon Robb got into some early trouble as she could not find the strike zone and was lifted late in the second inning for Shanna Chappell with Covington leading 2-0. Robb drove in Sam Giesler with a single in the seventh inning for Westview’s only run. The Lady Chargers end their stellar season with a 36-13 record.
May 29, 2008 — UT Martin men’s basketball player Lester Hudson has been named the Ohio Valley Conference’s Male Athlete of the Year. The junior made school, conference and NCAA history during the season when he became the first player to record a quadruple-double with 25 points, 12 rebounds, 10 assists and 10 steals against Central Baptist College. Hudson had one triple-double during the season along with eight double-doubles and he scored 30 points or more 11 times.

May 29, 2012 — The 2012 Martin Kiwanis Club and UTM’s Kappa Alpha Order held a disc golf tournament with the top three teams separated by just two strokes. Curtis Kunkel and Jason DeVitto won the top spot with a score of 53. The team of Kirk Rodgers and Cal Crenshaw finished second with a score of 54. Third place went to the team of Donald Cox and Chad Gray with a score of 55.
May 31, 2012 — Former Dresden baseball standout Matt Beaty is preparing himself for the NCAA Tournament Regionals. The freshman first baseman-designated hitter for Belmont helped lead the Bruins to the Atlantic Sun Conference tournament championship and NCAA automatic berth. Beaty is going into the regionals leading the Bruins  with 46 RBI, seven home runs and five triples.
