Handgun permit course to be offered at UTM

A course presenting the minimum requirements mandated by the State of Tennessee to obtain a handgun carry permit will be offered June 8 from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. at the University of Tennessee at Martin main campus.
Terry Guthrie, a police officer and certified firearms instructor, will teach the course.
Participants will be instructed in the laws for the use of and state standards for carrying a firearm. The proper way to handle a firearm and training on proper techniques for better shooting accuracy will also be taught.
All participants must pass a written and practical test to receive a completion certificate. The state will issue a permit upon receipt of the certificate.
Each student must be at least 21 years of age to participate in this specialized training and must have no prior felony convictions.
All participants are required to bring their own firearm and 50 rounds of ammunition, along with hearing and eye protection. Classes include four hours in the classroom and four hours on the range.
The registration fee to attend the course is $75 per person.
