Skyhawks have trio in minors

Former UT Martin baseball standouts Alec Mills, Wes Alsup and Ty Nelson are all currently playing in the professional ranks.
Mills, who was drafted in the 22nd round of the 2012 MLB Draft, is currently with the Lexington Legends — the A affiliate of the Kansas City Royals.
The 6-4, 185-pound right-handed pitcher has been one of the most dominant bullpen options in the South Atlantic League, earning a victory and team-high six saves with a 1.75 ERA in 14 appearances.
A native of Clarksville, Mills played for UT Martin from 2009-11 and ranks in the top-five in Skyhawk history in career appearances (67), career strikeouts (165), single-season victories (seven, 2011), single-season appearances (30, 2011) and single-season strikeouts (74, 2012).
After spending time in the Atlanta Braves’ and Seattle Mariners’ organizations, Alsup has joined the Winnipeg (Manitoba) Goldeyes out of the American Association independent league.
The 6-2, 215-pound right-handed pitcher inked a contract on May 20 and immediately made an impact in his debut two days later, striking out the side in a perfect inning of relief.
Alsup donned a Skyhawk uniform from 2009-10 and was one of the best relievers in the OVC in 2010, when he notched seven saves — a single-season UT Martin record.
Nelson is back for his second season with the Schaumburg (Ill.) Boomers out of the Frontier Indepen-dent League.
After playing in 41 games behind the plate for the Boomers in 2012, he re-signed his contract on Jan. 25.
Nelson lettered at UT Martin from 2009-10, earning All-OVC second team honors in 2010.
That season, he smacked 84 hits and 20 doubles.
