A Union City man was arrested early Sunday on a weapons offense and drug-related charges.
Shyheim Shaquille Slayton, 19, of 2712 Hillside Drive, Union City, was arrested on charges of unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a Schedule VI controlled substance (marijuana) for resale and possession of drug paraphernalia, according to a Union City Police Department report.
The charges were levied after the reporting officer said he observed a handle of a handgun in plain view under the passenger seat of a vehicle. In addition, a marijuana grinder was allegedly observed in plain view in the front passenger side door panel.
Slayton was stopped by police as he was allegedly attempting to get in the driver’s seat. Police said 18 grams of a green plant material believed to be marijuana were located in his pocket, and the officer also reported digital scales were found in the glove box and a Rossi .38 caliber handgun was recovered from under the passenger seat, resulting in Slayton’s arrest.
He was taken to the Obion County Law Enforcement Complex.
