Looking back … UTM’s Nanney in 3rd after NCAA golf tourney opening round

30 Years Ago
May 17, 1983 — Greenfield Junior High presented several awards at its annual sports banquet held at Shoney’s in Martin. Athletes received awards in football, and in boys’ and girls’ basketball. Mark Thompson, Joey Featherson and Chris Pence were among those who received football awards. Larry Porch, John Dees and Eric Higgs were a few of the boys to earn basketball awards. Michelle Capps, Barbara Williams and Beth Wright earned awards in girls’ basketball.
May 19, 1983 — Sharon native and UT Martin sophomore golfer Pat Nanney had a good opening round in the NCAA Division II national championship golf tournament with a two-over par 73 and is in third place. Nanney is four shots back of the leader and two shots back of second place. The four-day 88-player tournament will continue over the next three days. Nanney finished 49th in the 120-player field in last year’s championship tournament.

May 13, 1993 — Gleason senior center Lee Ann Bell has been chosen to be one of the 10 players to represent the state in the Tennessee-Georgia Prep All-Star game to played in Chattanooga in June. Bell helped lead the Lady Bulldogs to two straight state finals and one state championship. She was the Class A state tournament Most Valuable Player this year.
May 13, 1993 — Dresden slugged its way into the District 13A Baseball Tournament semifinals with a 16-3 trouncing of West Carroll. David Dunlap led the Lions with a pair of doubles. Craig McAlister, Daryl Griffith and Shane Bone all had one double for the Lions. Jay Bowers got the win. He struck out five in four innings of work.

May 13, 2003 — Dresden upset Gleason in the District 13A softball semifinals with a convincing 15-1 win. Jennifer Sanders scored the Lady Bulldogs’ lone run in the second inning. The Lady Lions erupted for nine runs in the third inning. Kayla Rendon, Kate Moore and Katie Kelly all had run-scoring hits in the inning. Brooke Levister was the winning pitcher, while Ashley Wilson took the loss.
May 15, 2003 — Westview boys’ soccer team finally broke a jinx with an 8-0 homefield regional tournament win over Trinity Christian Academy in the Region 7A-AA soccer semifinals. The Chargers had been winless in their last four home regional tournament games. Junior Matt Hurt turned the hat-trick with three goals with all three coming in the first half. Drew Lester also scored in the first period. Derek Ezell netted two goals in the second period.

May 13, 2008 — Westview’s Lady Chargers won their second consecutive District 13AA softball tournament with a 9-2 win over Milan. Shanna Chappell picked up the win for Westview with the defense backing her up. Ashley Bynum got the Lady Chargers on the board in the first inning with a two-run single. Jenna Hazelwood had a two-run base hit that brought in Shaylon Robb and Carmesha Owens in a four-run fourth inning.
May 15, 2008 — Greenfield’s Brett Perkins decided to continue his baseball career with his signing to attend Union University. Union head coach Brent Fronabarger wanted Perkins because he adds instant depth to his team as a freshman. Greenfield head coach Mike Riggs says Perkins has the kind of baseball intelligence and aptitude you cannot teach on the baseball diamond.

May 15, 2012 — The UT Martin softball team won its second Ohio Valley Conference tournament with a 6-2 win over Tennessee Tech and with it a second trip to the NCAA Tournament. Starting pitcher Chelsea Jones was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. She had nine strikeouts, allowed two runs on six hits and no walks in the deciding game. Erica Duke and Jenny Bain both went deep with home runs in the in the fifth inning. Duke hit a solo shot and Bain blasted a two-run shot to give the Skyhawks a 6-2 advantage that would hold up to be the final score.
May 17, 2012 — Westview held its annual basketball awards banquet with several players on the boys’ and girls’ teams earning postseason accolades. Antonio Hogard, Jordan Davis and Chris Evans were among the Chargers to receive awards. Katie Vincent, Tiffany Rechis and Teddy Vincent were just a few of the Lady Chargers to earn postseason team awards.
