A piece of equipment was heavily damaged by fire Thursday afternoon at a road construction site on Highway 22 between Union City and Martin.
Firefighters from the Union City Fire Department responded to the report of a vehicle fire at 1:13 p.m. on Highway 22 at the Shaffner Road exit and arrived to find a piece of construction equipment already engulfed in flames in its engine compartment and at the operator’s platform.
The piece of equipment was used in laying down asphalt, according to a fire department report and personnel at the scene. It apparently was owned by Ford Construction Company.
After firefighters initially knocked down the fire, one lane of the highway was reopened for traffic flow while overhaul was completed, the fire department reported.
Firefighters remained on the scene until almost 2 p.m.
