MEMPHIS (AP) — The unified Memphis and Shelby County school board is proposing a budget less than the amount the separate school systems are spending in the current year.
According to The Commercial Appeal, the unified board is proposing a spending plan of $1.187 billion for 2013-14. That is $74.1 million less than the combined current year budgets. It would be the least spent on the county’s conventional schools since 2007.
There is still a gap in funding, mostly because $64 million disappears when the Memphis City Schools cease to exist at the end of June.
After two meetings for public discussion, the unified board meets again Thursday to approve the budget request and send it to the county Commission.
