Danny Jowers of Kenton checked out a few of his ripe strawberries Friday afternoon when he visited his two-acre strawberry patch off Union Grove Road. “A virus (out of Nova Scotia) just about wiped us out. Add that to the cold and wet weather this spring and it’s going to be a short season,” Jowers said about this year’s strawberry crop. He has already had his crews out picking strawberries at his farm and expects to have strawberries into the second week of June. He said a vendor will have flats of strawberries for sale on the Reelfoot Packing plant parking lot up to four times a week for the next few weeks. Jowers has six different varieties of strawberries growing on his farm — Mojave, Albion, Camarosa, Camino Real, Benchie and Chandler.
