Sports Briefs Posted: Friday, May 10, 2013 12:00 pm UT Martin baseball offering skills camp UT Martin’s baseball program and head coach Bubba Cates will offer a half-day Skyhawks Skills Camp May 28-31 at Skyhawk Field. The camp will emphasize hitting, fielding and baserunning with individual instruction and a low instructor-to-camper ratio. The camp will run each day 9 a.m.-noon. Pre-registration fee is $80, and registration the first day of the camp is $100. For more information, call the UTM baseball office at 881-7337. Persimmon to host Wright golf outing The 36th Annual Stephen Wright Memorial Industry Appreciation Golf Tournament and Dinner will be May 16 at Persimmon Hills Golf Course in Sharon. This is a six person scramble. Anyone wanting to play or wanting to enter a team, please contact the Chamber office at wcassistant@crunet.com or call 364-3787. Entry deadline is Friday. Each golfer receives a complimentary “Goodie Bag” filled with favors donated from Chamber members. Anyone who would like to donate any promotional items for goodie bags or door prizes, should contact the Chamber. Those businesses and donations will be recognized at the tournament. Pair of hoop camps on Skyhawk agenda The UT Martin softball program will host a day camp May 28-30 for players ages 6-13 and an exposure camp for players ages 14 through graduating seniors June 18-19, both camps at Bettye Giles Field. The May camp will run 9 a.m.-noon each day with an expanded pitching and hitting camp from 1-3 p.m. the first two days. Campers wishing to attend both morning and afternoon sessions can stay between sessions and receive additional instructions. Those campers should bring their own lunches. Cost for the camp is $125. The camp for prep players will run 9 a.m.-3 p.m. each day and will include hitting, fielding, baserunning, pitching and scrimmaging. The $125 cost covers insurance and a camp T-shirt. Elswick, Carr lead UT Martin awards UT Martin seniors Kasey Elswick and Derek Carr brought home Athlete of the Year awards at the eighth annual Senior Athlete Night banquet in the Duncan Ballroom at the Boling University Center. Elswick earned Bettye Giles Female Athlete of the Year accolades, while Carr was named Bob Carroll Male Athlete of the Year. Leah Taylor (Outstanding Sportsmanship Award) and Fred Flenorl (Inspiration Award) also racked up the hardware. A four-year starter for the UT Martin volleyball program, Elswick wrapped up her illustrious career by becoming the Ohio Valley Conference’s all-time career leader with 2,606 digs. The Skyhawks’ lead signal caller for the last three years, Carr concluded his remarkable career as the program’s all-time leader with 8,428 passing yards, 665 completions and 69 touchdowns.
