Carr New York-bound for camp with Giants Posted: Friday, May 10, 2013 12:00 pm Derek Carr, the starting signal-caller for the UT Martin football team the last three seasons, has been selected to participate in a mini-camp tryout with the New York Giants over the weekend. Carr will compete in a series of practices on Friday and Saturday, to earn a spot on the Giants roster. New York finished last season with a 9-7 record under head coach Tom Coughlin, one year after capturing its fourth Super Bowl crown in 2011. Jerry Reese, the Giants senior vice president and general manager, is a 1986 graduate of UT Martin after a four-year standout career under head coaches Lynn Amedee (1981) and Fred Pickard (1982-84). A native of McKenzie, Carr will go down as one of the best quarterbacks not only in UT Martin history, but in the history of the Ohio Valley Conference. Carr was the only FCS or FBS player to throw for seven touchdowns in two different games in 2012, accomplishing the feat at Murray State on Oct. 13 and against Jacksonville State on Nov. 3. This past fall, Carr ranked in the top 10 nationally in passing yards per game (397.8, seventh) and total passing yards (3,276, eighth). He ended his career ranking third in the OVC in touchdown passes (69), fourth in total offense (8,484), completions (665) and passing yards (8,428) and fifth in pass attempts (1,110).
