When Jenna Miller finished off Amanda Lopez at the No. 3 singles spot, Union City had its second straight District 14A-AA girls’ tennis team championship.
The Lady Tornadoes were well on their way to the title regardless.
Ahead in the three other matches, UC was likely to claim the team title had anything gone wrong in Miller’s match, but that win completed a 4-0 shutout in the district finals Monday afternoon.
UC will next play Greenfield at Bethel on Thursday for the Region 7A-AA team crown. UC defeated the Lady Yellowjackets last season and then won the sectional team match on the way to a state tournament appearance.
Union City started the day with wins on the doubles courts as Maddie King and Tara Elam posted an 8-4 decision over Mary Sharpe and Amy Davis, while Miller and Ellen Bearden knocked off Lopez and Molly McAdams 8-1.
Bearden then had no trouble in the No. 4 singles match with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Marleen Negrete.
Miller ended play with her 6-2, 6-4 triumph.
The Lady Twisters were up on the other three singles courts when Miller clinched the title.
Elam was two games away from putting away Davis, up 4-2 in the second set after a 6-2 win in the first. King had taken a 6-4 win over Sharpe in the first set of their No. 1 match, and Alex Parks was up 5-1 on McAdams at the No. 5 spot.
