Top seeds lead way for G’field Posted: Friday, May 3, 2013 12:00 pm The District 13A-AA tennis tournament for singles and doubles will be played Saturday at Bethel University. starting at 9 a.m. Greenfield’s participants will be Emily Allen and Callie Croom in singles. Kalee Kesterson and Kendal Cook will be one Lady Yellowjacket doubles team, while Lauren Rush and Ashton Pence will team up to be the other Greenfield entry. To advance to the region tournament in singles and doubles, you must make the district finals. Greenfield has a history of district singles champions, having won the past five girls’ district singles titles. Allen is seeded No. 1 in this year’s district singles tournament. She was unable to play tennis in the 2012 season while recovering from a knee injury suffered during the 2011-12 basketball season. Allen opens the tournament with Breanne Pierce of Milan. Croom nearly made the finals last year, losing a close match in three sets to Camden’s top player. She opens the singles tournament with that same player, Haley Hays of Camden. Greenfield has done well in the district doubles in recent years. Meagan Porter and Mallory Robinson won the district doubles title in 2010. Cook and Kesterson were the district doubles champions in 2011 and came in second in 2012. Cook and Kesterson, the No. 1 seed in the 2013 doubles tournament, have a bye in the first round and move straight to the semis. Pence and Rush also are in the doubles competition.
