Josephine Marie (Ek) Fishel, known affectionately by her family as Ma Jo, 76, of Jackson passed away May 1, 2013, at Humboldt Rehab Center.
Services for Mrs. Fishel will be Saturday at noon at Northside United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at Highland Memorial Gardens in Jackson. The family will receive friends 10:30 a.m. until the funeral hour at noon at the church Saturday.
Mrs. Fishel was born March 13, 1937, in Mogadore, Ohio, daughter of the late Axel Bernard and Hulda Sophia (Anderson) Ek, who were both Swedish immigrants to the U.S. Mrs. Fishel was very proud of her Swedish heritage.
She graduated from Kent State University in Kent, Ohio, with a degree in education. Teaching young children was her passion. She taught kindergarten for 28 years in South Fulton. She was an active member of Northside United Methodist Church and active in the hosting and visitation ministry. She was also an avid gardener.
She is survived by her husband, James Fishel of Jackson; two sons and her daughter-in-law, Jimmy Fishel and his fiancée, Lori Nelson, of Jackson and Eric and Camielle Fishel of Union City; her daughter and son-in-law, Sally and Clay McCormack of Jackson; seven grandchildren, Haily Fishel, Sophie McCormack, Cameryn Fishel, Luke McCormack, Matt McCormack, Kendall Nelson and Chase Nelson; and two sisters, Lillian Brickley and Vera Blind.
She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Edith Tetrault and Agnes Walker; and four brothers, William Ek, Herbert Ek, Roy Ek and Bernie Ek.
