UC boys suffer early postseason exit

Just one day after finishing up a strong showing on the individual level, the Union City boys’ tennis squad suffered an early postseason exit in team play.
Union City dropped a 4-1 decision to Halls in the District 14A-AA finals at the Union City Courts on Wednesday afternoon, ending the squad’s 2013 season.
The doubles tandem of Jacob Triplett and Devin King are still alive, though, and will play in the Region 7A-AA Tournament on May 13 at the Bethel courts in McKenzie.
Triplett and King led a solid effort for the Twisters in the boys’ doubles bracket of the District 14A-AA Tournament earlier this week, romping through four matches with a pair of 8-0 wins on Monday and then equally impressive triumphs of 6-0, 6-1 and 6-2, 6-4 on Tuesday.
That 6-2, 6-4 verdict came against Halls’ top team of Mason Joyner and Garrett Gooch in the district title match. The roles were reversed on Wednesday, however, as Joyner and Gooch posted an 8-4 win over Triplett and King.
Joyner also beat Triplett at the top singles spot with a 6-3, 6-0 verdict.
Parker Dotson suffered a 6-4, 6-4 setback to Adam Greer at the No. 5 singles spot, while Critchlow brothers Ellis and Sam were shut out 7-0 in the tiebreaker to fall 9-8 to Greer and Devan Castelli at the No. 2 singles spot.
UC’s lone win of the day came at No. 3 in singles as King defeated Luke Wilson 6-2, 6-0.
Sam Critchlow had posted a 7-5 win over Gooch, while Ellis Crictchlow had lost his first set to Castelli when play was halted.
