The Messenger 05.01.13 U.S. Rep. Stephen Fincher is accepting applications from students in Tennessee’s 8th Congressional District who believe they have what it takes to succeed at one of the United States Service Academies. Applicants must be unmarried and between the ages of 17 and 23. “I have the distinct privilege to nominate exceptional young men and women from the 8th Congressional District in Tennessee State to the U.S. military academies,” Fincher said. “Those receiving nominations and appointments to the service academies must exhibit strength in character, academics, leadership, physical aptitude, medical fitness and motivation.” A limited number of Tennesseans will be nominated to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y., the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo., and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, N.Y. The honor of attending a service academy comes with an obligation and commitment to serve in the military for a minimum of five years upon graduation, according to Fincher. “There is no greater honor for an American citizen than to wear a uniform in service to the United States. I encourage all interested candidates to consider applying for a nomination,” Fincher said. Requirements and applications are available online at http://www.fincher.house.gov under the “Serving You” tab; or those interested may contact Marianne Purcell at (901) 682-4422 for more information. All military academy applications must be received in Fincher’s district office in Memphis no later than 5 p.m. Nov. 29.
