UC’s style on display for Halls | | Posted: Thursday, April 25, 2013 7:00 pm
| The recipe for success has long been great pitching and the long ball. Union City put on a clinic showcasing those two ingredients on Wednesday. Sadie Hollis struck out 13 and both Tory Reedy and Bettye Claire Beachum blasted home runs to lead the Lady Tornadoes to a 10-0 whitewash of Halls in prep softball at Graham Park. UC is now 15-5 heading into today’s matchup against Class 2A power Westview. On the baseball field Wednesday, the Red Devils dropped an 8-7 eight-inning decision to Dresden. SF’s three softball games — two vs. Humboldt and the other against Trenton — were postponed due to wet grounds. Today’s slate has Union City at Trinity Christian Academy and South Fulton hosting twin-cities’ rival Fulton City in baseball, while Westview visits UC, Obion Central plays at Haywood and SF visits Halls in softball. SOFTBALL UC 10, Halls 0 Hollis scattered four hits and did not walk a batter in improving her pitching slate to 9-4. She was equally impressive at the dish with three hits, including a double, and an RBI. Reedy smacked a three-run dinger and drove in four runs in all, while Beachum launched a two-run bomb. Brittany Parker doubled and singled, while Ashley Faught had a two-base hit and an RBI. UC blew the game open with a four-run fifth, followed by a three-run sixth. First-pitch for today’s game is set for 5 p.m. BASEBALL Dresden 8, SF 7 The Red Devils (9-15) continue to be haunted by errors, committing six that led to a half-dozen Dresden runs. The Lions scored six times in the third, that rally fueled by South Fulton misplays that included four ground balls going between defenders’ legs on the afternoon. Still, SF battled back to tie the game at 7-all before Dresden scored in the top of the eighth to get out of town with the victory. Ryan Prince had two of the Devils’ five hits. Tyler Morris had a RBI double, Hunter Wade reached three times via a hit, a walk and after being plunked, and Zack Vaughn singled home a run. Aaron Hollingsworth threw five solid innings in relief of starter Curtis Cathey, yet was still charged with the pitching loss. Neither of the two runs charged to Hollingsworth were earned. He struck out five and allowed but two hits and two walks. Today’s game with Fulton Published in The Messenger 4.25.13 | | | |
