UC, Rebel netters ready for postseason

Union City is ready to see if depth pays off, while Obion Central is looking for its high seeds to make a run.
Both schools’ tennis programs begin play in the District 14A-AA Tennis Tournament on Saturday morning, action taking place at both the Union City Courts and the Obion County Fairgrounds courts in Union City.
The first three rounds are slated for Saturday, action beginning at 9 a.m., and should finish up on Tuesday. Thursday is also set aside for matches, should more time be needed.
For the two Golden Tornado teams, each following strong runs through the regular season, team depth will be the key as the top two singles seeds will lead the way in doubles play, while middle seeded players will carry the torch in singles action.
Maddie King and Tara Elam, 10-2 as a tandem during the regular season, are seeded No. 1 in the girls’ bracket, while Jacob Triplett and Devin King, also 10-2, are seeded second in boys’ play.
King and Elam will play Alli Ruddle and Carmen Hutchens of Obion Central in the second round.
OC has the No. 5 seed in doubles as Lindsay Castellaw and Marissa Howard, the top singles players all season, will await the winner of an opening round match.
Alex Parks and Laura Reed Smith round out UC’s entrants in the girls’ doubles bracket.
Triplett and King will take on Westview’s Ethan Batchelor and Mason Capps in the second round. Central’s Mason Warren and Dalton Edmaiston will take on the tournament’s top seeded team, Mason Joyner and Garrett Gooch of Halls.
UC’s John Harpole and Charleston Yanders will play in the opening round, as will OC’s Dakota Lewis and Jeremy Nichols.
In girls’ singles action, Jenna Miller and Ellen Bearden — seeded third and fourth most of the season — will lead Union City.
Miller, 11-1 in the regular season, is in an opening round match against Amanda McKenzie of Ripley, while Bearden (12-0) faces No. 2 seed Corena Hasselle in the second round.
For the Lady Rebels, Mallory Conley will play Sarah Ann Franklin of Covington in the opening round, and Shelly Pate will take on third-seeded Amy Davis of Haywood in the second round.
Union City’s Sam Critchlow is seeded fourth in the boys’ singles tourney after posting a 10-2 regular season record and will play Lucas Bushart of Crockett County in the second round.
Ellis Critchlow is in the opening round, taking on OC’s Austin Riley.
Dallis Mathis is the other Rebel in the bracket, playing Jonathan Nevels of Gibson County in the opening round.
