The UT Martin softball team registered nine hits and four runs, but it wasn’t enough to outlast Ohio Valley Conference east division leader Eastern Kentucky at Bettye Giles Field.
EKU picked up a 4-1 win in the opening game and then finished with a 5-3 win in the second game.
The wins came a day after UTM split with Morehead State, giving head coach Donley Canary his 400th win in a 5-3 win in the nightcap following a 4-0 loss in the opener
The Skyhawks (30-16, 11-9 OVC) will return to action on Wednesday when they host Memphis. First pitch from Bettye Giles Field is slated for 4 p.m.
In the opener, the Skyhawks were unable to overcome the first inning of the visiting Colonels (29-17, 16-5 OVC) as they scored two runs quickly in the top of the first inning in the 4-1 decision.
The Skyhawks managed only three hits in the ballgame but none was bigger than the hit by sophomore Kenzi Tate in the bottom half of the sixth inning. Tate went 2-for-2 at the plate while launching her 10th home run on the season in the sixth.
Casey Vincent picked up the tough loss, striking out five.
Becca Williams doubled and drove in a run, and Sam McClure tripled and scored for the Skyhawks in the second game
Tate registered the loss.
Former Westview standout Shaylon Robb earned the save as she started the game, was replaced by Hayley Flynn and then came back in for Flynn in the fifth inning. She finished with four strikeouts.
Canary’s 400th came thanks to a five-run fourth inning in the second game as Williams ripped a three-run double and Deven Wilson followed with a two-run homer.
Tate was credited with her 16th win while pitching her 14th complete game of the season. Tate allowed just two earned runs and struck out five.
Vincent struck out seven in a complete-game loss in the opener.
