Wins over Tomcats proof that UC’s set to make strong push

Union City is closing strong.
The Lady Tornadoes picked up a 6-1 win, while the Twister boys won 5-2 in prep tennis action Friday afternoon at Haywood.
With the wins, UC’s girls are now 10-1 and the boys are 9-2 heading into the final week of the regular season.
Union City will play across town at the Obion County Fairgrounds courts today against Obion Central, play beginning at 4 p.m., and then take a long road trip to Covington Tuesday afternoon.
The District 14A-AA tournament begins Saturday morning and will be played at both sets of courts in Union City.
In beating the same Lady Tomcat team that ended Greenfield’s 55-match regular season win streak earlier in the week, UC posted 8-3 wins at the third, fourth and fifth seeds.
Jenna Miller took out Amanda Lopez, Ellen Bearden downed Marleen Negrete and Alex Parks topped Molly McAdams.
Maddie King held off Mary Sharpe 8-4 at No. 1.
The lone loss of the day for the Lady Tornadoes might have been the most exciting match as Tara Elam fell behind Amy Davis 7-1 before battling back to a 7-7 tie, winning the last two games at deuce point. Davis managed to claim a 9-7 win, though.
Elam and King posted an 8-4 win over Sharpe and Davis at the No. 1 doubles spot, and the twosome of Miller and Bearden downed Lopez and McAdams 8-0 at No. 2.
Doubles play and singles depth paid off in the boys’ match as UC won both doubles matches by 8-2 scores and then claimed the second, third and fifth singles spots on the ladder.
Jacob Triplett and Devin King topped Kyle Sills and Quentin Douglas at No. 1, and Sam Critchlow joined up with Parker Dotson to defeat Ethan Riddle and Will Clinton.
Critchlow knocked out Douglas 8-4, King handled Riddle 8-1 and Dotson downed Walker Thornton in singles play.
