An area man told Union City police someone attempted to burn his vehicle late Saturday night or early Sunday outside a local establishment.
Timothy E. Smith of Martin said someone attempted to burn his 1977 Chevrolet as it sat parked on the parking lot of the Snack Shop at 1215 East Main St. in Union City, according to a Union City Police Department report.
The incident allegedly occurred between 11:30 p.m. Saturday and 12:15 a.m. Sunday.
An officer reported the vehicle had smoke and heat damage to its right rear area and its right rear tire was burned in two places, destroying the 15-inch Master Craft Avenger tire. The vehicle had been parked in a grassy area of the lot and police also noted the grass was burned where the vehicle had been parked.
According to the report, the reporting officer smelled an odor of gasoline that had allegedly been used to set the fire. The fire apparently burned itself out, preventing the loss of the vehicle.
