NASHVILLE (AP) — The Tennessee Titans will open the NFL season with their first two games on the road, starting Sept. 8 at Pittsburgh, and a team coming off a 6-10 season will play in prime time once against Indianapolis in November.
The league released the schedule Thursday night.
This is the third time the Titans will open at Pittsburgh since 2005 as the franchises play each other for the sixth straight season. The schedule also has Tennessee starting with two games on the road for the first time since 1994 when this franchise still called Houston home, and the Titans will be playing in Houston on Sept. 15.
Coach Mike Munchak said opening in Pittsburgh is a special atmosphere and obviously a very familiar rival.
“Two games on the road is a tough way to open for us and our fans, but that is balanced out with three in a row at home,” Munchak said in a statement. “It is the runs away from home at the end of the preseason and into the regular season and then the stretch near the end of the season that jumped out at me initially. But you can always find pluses and minuses in any schedule.”
The Titans’ home opener is Sept. 22 against San Diego, the first of three straight home games. They will play a total of four home games in a five-game span in Nashville with a road trip to Seattle on Oct. 13 before hosting the defending NFC champion San Francisco 49ers on Oct. 20 among seven games against playoff teams from last season.
Their reunion with former coach Jeff Fisher comes Nov. 3 when the Titans visit Fisher’s new team in St. Louis along with former teammates like Cortland Finnegan and Jared Cook.
The Titans will get to host AFC South rival Indianapolis on NFL Network on Thursday, Nov. 14.
That will be the second home game against an AFC South opponent for the Titans in five days with Jacksonville visiting Nov. 10.
For the first time since 1981, this franchise not only is hosting three straight home games but making a three-game road trip. That starts Nov. 24 at Oakland before a trip Dec. 1 to Indianapolis, and the swing ends Dec. 8 at Denver against Peyton Manning — the quarterback the Titans missed out on signing in March 2012.
That puts Tennessee concluding the season with four of its final six on the road, though the Titans host Arizona on Dec. 15 and Houston for the season finale on Dec. 29. They visit Jacksonville on Dec. 22 for their final road trip.
Tennessee opens the preseason Aug. 8 hosting Washington and Atlanta on Aug. 24.
The Titans will visit Cincinnati on Aug. 17 and conclude the preseason Aug. 29 at Minnesota. Published in The Messenger 4.19.13 , |
