Students at the University of Tennessee at Martin are getting set to host a Relay for Life event in the Tom and Kathleen Elam Center to raise money for cancer research.
The event — which is being planned and run entirely by student volunteers — will begin at 6 p.m. Friday and will end at 6 a.m. Saturday.
In addition to student volunteers, over 40 teams and 400 participants have already signed up to participate in the event and have raised over $8,000 of the overall $20,000 goal.
All students and faculty of the university, as well as all members of the surrounding communities, are invited and encouraged to attend the family-friendly event, which will feature a wide array of entertainment and activities.
The main focus of the all-night event is the fundraising walk-a-thon in which members of each team will take turns participating throughout the night. Other activities for the event will include “Minute to Win It” games, Recreation Rampage, a silent disco, the entertainment of Traveling Max, a musical performance by Jordan Stokes, live country musicians and more.
In addition to the entertainment, each participating team will host tents around the track, where they will either offer items and food for sale or some other fundraising activity. Relay patrons can also sponsor cancer victims in their lives by purchasing luminaria candles to be placed around the track.
