Wilson’s walk-off ends Skyhawks’ extra effort Posted: Friday, April 12, 2013 12:00 pm Deven Wilson singled home Becca Williams with two outs in the 11th inning for the winning run as UT Martin defeated Southern Illinois 5-4 in softball action Wednesday at Bettye Giles Field. Under international rules, Williams was put on second base to start the 11th but remained there as UTM had two pop fly outs before Wilson’s walk-off single. Wilson was 2-for-5, while Williams had a double. Kenzi Tate ripped a two-run homer in the third inning, UTM’s second of the day as Kayla Wade knocked as solo shot in the first. Autumn Glenn (2-1), UTM’s third pitcher, picked up the win. UTM hosts Murray State in an OVC Friday and Saturday. BASEBALL Vanderbilt 10, UTM 3 No. 2-ranked Vanderbilt broke open a close game late at Hawkins Field on Tuesday night. After Vanderbilt (30-4) struck first with a run in their first at-bat, the Skyhawks came right back with a run in the top of the second to tie the game. The Commodores added another run in the bottom of the second, but UT Martin once again showed its resiliency, evening the score at 2-2 after the top of the fourth. However, Vanderbilt scored seven runs over the next two innings on its way to the win. Matt Haynes had a pair of hits and drove in two runs to lead UT Martin (9-23). Brent Morris tallied two hits and scored twice, Grant Glasser collected a pair of hits and scored a run and Wade Collins registered his team-leading 25th RBI for the Skyhawks. Making his first start of the season, Chris Ross (3-2) pitched well early but took the loss after allowing six runs off five hits in 31⁄3 innings. Published in The WCP 4.11.13 |
