Looking Back …Mount, Gray represent Weakley County in state bowling tourney Posted: Friday, April 12, 2013 12:00 pm The Weakley County Press today takes a look back at the top local sports events from 30, 20, 10, five and one year ago. ––––– 30 Years Ago April 7, 1983 — Westview’s baseball team lost to Memphis Sheffield 6-5 in a weather-shortened tournament in Mississippi. Jon Kim and Scott Baulding scored the first two runs for the Chargers. Doug Sims also scored in the scored for Westview. Mike Johnson took the complete game loss for the Chargers. April 12, 1983 — The Weakley County Women’s Bowling Association sent Barbara Mount of Sharon and Sammie Gray of Martin as delegates to the Tennessee State Women’s Bowling Association in Murfreesboro. 20 Years Ago April 8, 1993 — Westview’s baseball squad beat Ripley 7-6 in extra innings after trailing 6-5. Kevin Cavin’s single scored Jakie Thomas to tie the game at six-all. Chris McDaniel followed up Cavin’s RBI single with one of his own that scored Kevin Seymour for the winning run. April 8, 1993 — Dresden split a doubleheader with Lake County in baseball. The Lions dropped the first game 8-7 with Brad Pierpoint and Craig McAlister homering in the opener. Pierpoint hit a three-run blast in the Lions 16-2 win in the nightcap. Daryl Griffith went 2-for-2 while Jason Snider and Brian Gilbert each went 2-for-3. 10 Years Ago April 10, 2003 — Weakley Countians Paige Duncan McMillan and Jim Graves were inducted into the Gibson County Sports Hall of Fall at Trenton Peabody. McMillan was an All-West Tennessee and All-State honorable mention point guard who led Gibson County to the state semifinals her senior year in 1989. Graves was Martin High School’s head football coach in the late 1960s and got the team started on its 42-game winning streak over four seasons. April 10, 2003 — Greenfield earned an 8-0 win over Dresden in the “Battle of the Clements” baseball game with Andrew Clements of the Yellowjackets getting the better of Adam Clements of Dresden on the mound. Justin Lyles went yard for Greenfield on a 2-for-3 day at the plate. 5 Years Ago April 8, 2008 — UTM’s Donley Canary earned his 200th win as the head coach of the softball team. The Skyhawks beat defending Ohio Valley Conference champs Tennessee Tech 2-1 in extra innings. Savannah Roberts’ RBI single in the ninth inning got Canary his 200th victory. April 10, 2008 — Gleason got a 5-4 win over Dresden in softball action. Gleason’s Breenna Wallace scored the deciding run on Amy Spain’s single in the top of the sixth inning. Marlee Mason of Dresden drove in Hannah Wade with a double to make 5-4 in the bottom of the seventh. Riley Auvenshine got the win for the Lady Bulldogs. 1 Year Ago April 10, 2012 — Westview softball hurler Meagan Prince got 15 strikeouts in the Lady Chargers 6-0 win over Union City. Hailey Coleman and Kayla Guthrie both went 2-for-4 with Coleman scoring a pair of runs. April 10, 2012 — Greenfield improved its baseball record to 12-1 with a 10-1 win over Bradford.
