A Union City man was arrested Thursday and charged in connection with the theft of a car from a local apartment complex.
Damonte Perez Long, 21, of 900 Casey Circle, Union City, was arrested at 6:08 p.m. on a charge of theft over $1,000, according to a Union City Police Department report.
The charge stems from the theft of a 1988 Acura Legend owned by Zachary Green of 105 East Lee St., Union City. The vehicle was reported missing Tuesday from the parking lot of Union City Apartments on Lynn Street, where it was left after it broke down a couple of months ago, police reported.
An apartment tenant told police she had seen three black men load the vehicle onto a trailer pulled by an SUV. Green also told police a friend had also seen what he thought to be his vehicle on a trailer outside a convenience store on East Reelfoot Avenue.
After being reported stolen, the vehicle was located at A&J Salvage.
According to the police report, a local man and his son told police they were approached by Long, who allegedly told them he had been given a car for scrap and asked if they would help get it to A&J Salvage. Both agreed, not knowing the vehicle was stolen.
Police said the vehicle was taken to A&J Salvage and crushed.
