Judy Abshire of 1322 High St. in Union City got quite a surprise when she stepped out into her front yard Monday afternoon. Thousands of honey bees had swarmed her dogwood tree. She made a quick call to local beekeeper Merlin Lyell, who rushed over with a catch box to gather up the bees. “I’ve been fooling around with bees about as long as I’ve fooled around with transmissions, and that’s about 54 years,” he said as he scooped up a handful of bees from the tree trunk. Lyell estimated there were between 10,000 and 15,000 honey bees gathered around the tree. Once he got the queen bee into the catch box, the other bees began to follow. Lyell, who will turn 74 later this month, said at one time he had 994 bee hives, “but I’ve got far less than that now.”
