A University of Tennessee at Martin student was seriously injured in a fight early Saturday in Martin and a Nashville man has been charged.
Blake A. Brittain, identified by Martin police as a UTM student, was airlifted to a Nashville hospital for treatment of head injuries.
Arrested in the incident was William M. Goodrum, 23, of Nashville, who was charged with aggravated assault, according to a Martin Police Department report.
Brittain’s injuries apparently were sustained in an incident that occurred shortly before 3 a.m. Saturday at 220 Hannings Lane in Martin, where police responded to a report of a fight which had just occurred.
Officers arrived to find Brittain lying on the ground and “bleeding profusely” from his face, according to the police report. Martin fire and emergency medical services personnel responded and Brittain was initially transported to Volunteer Community Hospital in Martin.
Police said due to Brittain having obvious head injury from his head striking the ground, he was airlifted to a Nashville hospital for treatment. The hospital was not specified in the report.
As police investigated, Goodrum told officers during an interview that he struck Brittain once in the face with his fist, causing Brittain to fall to the ground, according to the report.
Goodrum told police that both he and Brittain were intoxicated and a verbal argument had begun. He claimed that during the argument, Brittain pushed him and his friend. After the shoving, Goodrum allegedly struck Brittain in the face with his fist. He told police that, to his knowledge, no one else struck Brittain.
At the time of the report, Brittain had been diagnosed with facial fractures and bleeding on the brain, police said. Due to the seriousness of those injuries, Goodrum was taken into custody on the aggravated assault charge.
