Assault charge levied

A Union City man was arrested for assault Monday night in connection with an alleged incident which left a Union City woman hospitalized.
Richard Lee Franks, 40, of 224 South Fourth St. was arrested at 8:49 p.m. and charged with aggravated assault, according to a Union City Police Department report.
The charge was levied in connection with an incident in which 48-year-old Christine Ann Kuta of 216 South Taylor St., Union City, was injured.
Police responded Monday night to Baptist Memorial Hospital-Union City after receiving a report an assault victim had been admitted for treatment.
Officers reported Ms. Kuta had several scratches and bruises on her arms and bruises around her neck that appeared to be caused by possible strangulation, as well as a massive knot on her forehead above one eye and a large knot on the back of her head, where six staples were required. Her left hand was also bruised and swollen, according to police.
Police arrested Franks at the Taylor Street address for the alleged domestic assault incident. Officers said he was intoxicated and was taken to the hospital emergency room for treatment of a small laceration on his right arm.
According to the report, police found large amounts of blood — including “pools of blood” — in different areas inside the residence, as well as a shattered front door glass.
Franks was still being held in the Obion County Law Enforcement Complex this morning and was scheduled to be arraigned on the assault charge at 1 p.m. today.
Monday night’s assault was not the first incident in recent months involving Franks and Ms. Kuta. On Aug. 27, 2012, Franks was hospitalized following an alleged stabbing incident that yielded assault charges against both him and Ms. Kuta, whom police identified as his girlfriend at the time, according to a story previously published in The Messenger.
The August 2012 story reported police had also responded in July 2012 and in November 2011 to domestic disputes at the couple’s residence, according to police reports on file.
