Bethel University pitcher Gary Ward was drafted by the New York Mets in the 21st round of the Major League Baseball draft Wednesday, but the Bethel ace decided Friday he will return for his senior season with the Wildcats.
He was the 650th overall pick in the draft. The 6-1, 195 junior lefty from Chesapeake, Va., was 8-1 this past season with the Wildcats.
Ward was No. 1 in the NAIA in strikeouts per innings with 13.2 per game. He was 3rd in the nation in total strikeouts with 122. He had five complete games with three shutouts and an ERA of 1.95.
“I want to stay at Bethel and get my degree,” Ward said. “I am flattered the Mets thought enough of me to draft me but I think it is important to complete my education in case baseball doesn’t work out. I think we will have a great team next year and I want to be a part of what I think can be a special year.
“I was out one year and it was tough coming back, and I think it would be even tougher the next time. If I have another good year, my time will still be there for pro baseball. I love Bethel, our team and coaches.”
Bethel Head Coach Rusty Thompson commented, “We are thankful the Mets recognized Gary and his talents. It says a lot about his ability and character. I will not deny, however, we are thrilled he is returning to pitch and get his degree. We look forward to having him back as a Wildcat.” Published in The WCP 6.12.12
