State Sen. Roy Herron is recovering from injuries sustained during a bicycle accident over the weekend.
Despite a broken collarbone, nine broken ribs and a bruised lung, Herron said he is truly blessed to have good friends and family surrounding him during this time.
The state senator was training for an upcoming Iron Man competition on Sunday afternoon between Rives and Kenton when he apparently hit some loose gravel and crashed his bike.
Herron admitted he and his friends were fighting the south wind for approximately an hour before turning away from the wind and that is when the accident occurred. He was taken to Union City’s Baptist Memorial Hospital before being flown by medical helicopter to Vanderbilt Hospital in Nashville. Herron was released from Vanderbilt Monday afternoon. Despite bruising, swelling and soreness, the state senator was back on the Senate floor in Nashville Monday evening.
Herron explained the only situation that prompted him to miss a vote was when his first son was born and he didn’t plan on missing a vote Monday evening as a result of the accident.
Herron represents Benton, Decatur, Henry, Henderson, Lake, Obion, Perry, Stewart and Weakley counties.
