SEVIERVILLE (AP) — It looked like an alligator, could have been a crocodile, but turned out to be a spectacled caiman. The Knoxville News Sentinel reported the 4 1/2 foot lizard was captured Tuesday afternoon in the Little Pigeon River in Sevierville. City spokesman Bob Stahlke had little information about how the animal was caught. It was first spotted just before noon Sunday, sunning itself of a rock. Police called in Bill Lucey, the director of a zoo called Rainforest Adventures. He was able to identify the animal, which Lucey said is legal as a pet in most states. Lucey said the caiman — native to the Amazon River region in South America — would never survive a Smoky Mountains winter. ——— Information from: The Knoxville News Sentinel, http://www.knoxnews.com Published in The Messenger 9.24.08
